City of Birmingham Public Transit Program, Program Management Office

Markets > Municipal > City of Birmingham Public Transit Program, Program Management Office

City of Birmingham, Alabama

The Birmingham Transit Program comprises various projects including rapid transit service, enhanced bus service, and expanding public transit service throughout the region.  All of these projects are aimed at enhancing quality of life, driving economic activity, and increasing mobility for citizens within the region.

The Birmingham Transit Program is multifaceted, potentially interfacing with other City of Birmingham and agency plans, projects, and strategies.  As such, the City engaged STRADA to provide program management services, which includes establishing and managing a Program Management Office (PMO).  STRADA, serving as the sponsor agent through the PMO, is providing oversight and quality assurance to ensure that the City’s prime objectives and desired outcomes are achieved.  This is being accomplished through coordination and alignment of all projects and resources.  PMO activities include the following:

  • Development of the program conceptual strategy and planning for the City’s Public Transit Program;
  • Development and maintenance of  the master program schedule that consolidates all implementation tasks, related projects, sponsor activities, responsibilities, resources, and milestones;
  • Consolidation of certain activities to achieve synergy and utilization of resources;
  • Development and maintenance of a project management plan comprising a set of standardized tools, techniques, and processes that will be applied across all projects;
  • Budget monitoring, coordination of project activities, production of project status reports, communication of project progress, management of quality activities, and other related tasks;
  • Documenting, tracking, and assisting with the resolution of project risks and issues throughout program implementation; and
  • Acting as interface for City and key stakeholders, including the Alabama Department of Transportation and the United States Department of Transportation (specifically the Federal Transit Administration).
